About the Author
John Bird, the author of over 100 textbooks on engineering and mathematical subjects, is the former Head of Applied Electronics in the Faculty of Technology at Highbury College, Portsmouth, U.K. More recently, he has combined freelance lecturing at Portsmouth University, with technical writing and Chief Examiner responsibilities for City and Guilds Telecommunication Principles and Mathematics, and examining for the International Baccalaureate Organisation. John Bird is currently a Senior Training Provider at the Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering in the Defence College of Marine and Air Engineering at H.M.S. Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire, U.K. The school, which serves the Royal Navy, is one of Europe's largest engineering training establishments.
Born in India, Carl Ross studied Naval Architecture specializing in stress analysis of pressure vessels. He research has led to a number of advances in submarine technology. How ta use this fine, fine book!

Well, we haven't been reviewin much these days cause we been sa busy around th homestead. But I told Momma I wus gone have ta write a good review a this one. It's been a couple years since we bought it and we've just got around ta usin it in th last six or eight months. This here book is a great problem book for mechanical engineerin on th order a REA's problem books for math an th like. Now it ain't no Cliff's notes. These here problems take some time.but if ya actually want ta learn some engineerin ya gonna haf ta swallow th medicine. It ain't no stand-alone book. Good God! I hope no idiot would think he could read this book and even do th problems and think he wuz a engineer. Now what we use it for is for th 17 year old. He's done algebra, trig and calculus in homeshcool and he wanted ta try a course on mechanical engineering. We got th book Mechanical Engineering Design by Shigley since he wants more a th practical stuff than th theory and we're usin this as a supplement. Shigley's has some great problems and some real meat in it but this book (along with Encyclopedia Britannica, Youtube, Wikipedia {God help us}, and th rest a teh internet.) Now compared ta Shigley's these problems is pretty easy. So, for example, ya go ta Shigley's and read Chapter 2 on Materials. Ya got discussions on strength and stiffness, tensile testin, stress and th like. Well, Shigley's has the plan a showin ya these topics as they relate to design. It expects ya ta know a lot a terms since yer expected ta have had a course in statics, dynamics and materials. Well, if ya want ta do that fine. But we ain't got no public school within about a million miles o us that teach any a these things. Ya ever heard a one? Me neither. Them public school 'taards is lucky if they can read My Pet Goat without soundin out th letters. And we want ta get a head start on college if our oldest decides ta go. So anyway, we use Mechanical Engineering Principles for a problem book ta fill in some back-ground that Shigley's don't provide. This here books has basic definitions for example, it defines stress in a real easy ta understand way. Then it gives ya three or four problems already worked out for ya. Then it gives ya a set a four or so problems ta work yerself. It gives ya the answers on the same page. Ya don't have ta be looking in th back ta check yerself. The problems at the end of the sections can be figgered out from th solved problems in that section. Ya do have ta think though. Whats good about this format is that ya got practically everything ya need on a couple a three pages. Yer not looking back a forth for how ta work a problem or for a definition. Now specifically about this book: Yep yer expected ta know algebra, trig and calculus. What? Ya've never studied em? Well, boo hoo hoo ya wanker. I guess it's time ya woke up and realized ya been effed by th public school system in this here good ol' US of A. Let me be careful how I say this so people that can't do math can understand it: It says ya don't need a engineering background. It don't say ya don't need ta know any math! It ain't writ ta be a engineering text. Read th description carefully and then try th Look Inside feature that th fine folks at Amazon has provided. Oh wait, I'm sorry! In addition ta some basic math background it does require that ya be able ta read on about th eleventh or twelfth grade level. Notice, it's written ta follow a syllabus. It's a problem book fer God's sake!. Now, I'm glad I got that off my chest, let's go on. Th book is in SI units so if ya have a problem with that this is a good way ta get up ta speed with 'em. Now, we've learned SI units in our homeschoolin but of course we don't use 'em much in th shop. Why would we? But if a feller wants ta be educated he needs ta learn how ta use metric. Or for you Murkans and George Bush fans: that fancy French measurin'. Our edition a Shigley's is in SI units so this works out well. Folks, quit bein stupid Murkans afraid ta learn anything, afraid ta work hard, afraid ta look stupid. Roll up yer sleeves, jump inta engineering or business or whatever it is that'll make a man out of ya and learn how ta do somethin.

Says no prior education on the subject is needed but fails to inform you that reader needs background in algebra, calc, trig, and geometry. Reading material is useless without a background in these subjects.

As a novice with an interest in engineering I find the book challenging, albeit a little difficult. This is not due to the book, but to my lack of knowledge, of which I am sure I will eventually learn a great deal in time.
