"Every bishop and priest in the Catholic Church should sit down and read this remarkable book."— The Tablet
Global Catholicism examines the complex pressure the Second Vatican Council placed on the Roman Catholic Church and the counterforces that have mobilized in responce to its reforms. Ian Linden considers whether the Catholic Church has lived up to the promise of the Vatican II and whether it has come to terms with the challenges of pluralism, modernity, and different forms of spirituality. He also focuses on historical and theological factors that have had a huge impact on the evolution and international standing of the church in the twentieth century.
Linden examines the Church's response to global and local wars and efforts to maintain peace; the growth of nationalism and the struggle for democratization in Africa; theological debates over liberation; the actions carried out by military dictatorships; guerilla combat in Latin America, Africa, and the Phillipines; interactions with communist governments; and inculturation and contact with a resurgent Islam. Depsite an honest assessment of the Church's failings, Linden ultimately portrays the Catholic Church as an organization uniquely attuned to globalization.

Review
Every bishop and priest in the Catholic Church should sit down and read this remarkable book. Ian Linden has quietly demolished canards levelled against those who believe that the reforming work of the Second Vatican Council is not yet complete.
(The Tablet)[An] admirable new book.
(Rupert Shortt Times Literary Supplement)Linden offers a detailed insider perspective of the Second Vatican Council and its roots and aftereffects.
(Choice)This book tells the fascinating and important story of Roman Catholicism's shift from a relatively Eurocentric to a more global Church.
(Catholic Historical Review 1900-01-00) Review
Anyone in need of a well-informed account of how a truly global church emerged from the Euro-centered ambiguities of the Second Vatican Council need seek no further than Ian Linden's book. Written with intellectual energy and lucidity, Linden combines realism with a theologically judicious diagnosis of the church's agendas and predicaments.
(Denys Turner, Yale University) About the Author

The real church
By farinel
A richly illuminating book. It takes the focus off of both the scandal mongering of the secular press and the brittle and insensitive gaspings from Rome. The concrete documentation of the life of the church in the two=thirds world, of the many martyrs of the last decades, contrasts with the doctrinal haggling and impasses within the curia. At the end, it is a hopeful book, because it conveys the astonishing work of the Holy Spirit in our times.Thank
you, gentle Angelo Roncalli.
