Jesus and Pocahontas: Gospel, Mission, and National Myth, by Howard A. Snyder

In Jesus and Pocahontas, Howard A. Snyder presents an alternative approach to the traditional story of the success of Christian settlement and mission in Jamestown, Virginia. This alternative approach presents an account of the life and conversion of Pocahontas which is respectful both of the early Jamestown and Native American accounts. Snyder presents a more complex story than the simple Pilgrim versus Native American theme popularised by past novels. Here, characters who are described are as unpredictable as they are predictable, and this account challenges not only the myth of Pocahontas itself but also its impact on historical, theological and missional narratives from the time of the first Jamestown settlements. Jesus and Pocahontas recounts the life of Pocahontas from her first sighting of English colonists when she was around ten years old, through her love affair with and marriage to John Rolfe and her conversion to the Christian faith and life in England . Woven into each part of this account are explanations of the many different ways in which this story influences our current perception of gospel, mission and nationhood.

Review
''I do not pass out compliments lightly to non-Indian writers who deal with Native American history and culture. In such writings I have seen the worst of paternalism and superiority time and again, but happily, I am very impressed with Howard's work. I think he has a keen understanding of the indigenous and European historical contexts, of mission, and of the nationalistic American myth. This book really speaks to the church and the nation, offering the possibility of a changed worldview. I encourage you to give the Pocahontas story another read from Howard Snyder's perspective; I think you will agree that he has begun a new and important conversation, one in which I wish to participate!''
--Randy Woodley, Director of Intercultural and Indigenous Studies, George Fox Seminary, Portland, OR

''In this book, Howard Snyder has succeeded in showing how under the spell of ethnocentrism, Pocahontas (1596-1617) became a nationalistic American myth that goes back to the English colonists who arrived in Virginia and founded Jamestown in 1607. Beyond that, however, he has succeeded in making of the Pocahontas story an insightful case study in the close interrelation that there is between the Christian mission and culture. I wholeheartedly recommend this book as a very good incentive to reflect on a subject that is oftentimes overlooked by people involved in missionary work.''
--C. Ren Padilla, President emeritus, Kairos Foundation, Buenos Aires, Argentina

''This is a book of remarkable scope and clarity: historical narrative, cultural criticism, theological reflection, and missional challenge, wrapped up in a masterful retelling of an iconic American story. Snyder recovers the human story of Pocahontas and sets it alongside the story shaped by American mythology and pop culture, presenting readers with a fascinating diptych that illumines timely truths about how America began and what America has become--and about Christian witness then and now.''
--L. Daniel Hawk, Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew, Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, OH --Wipf and Stock Publishers

Realistic Assessment of Pocahontas and Her Conversion to Christianity
By DoctorKC
Well written and balanced view of the life of Pocahontas, who willingly became a Christ-follower through the influence of several English settlers in Jamestown and successive settlements. From her first encounter with Captain John Smith to her biblical education by the Rev. Alexander Whitaker aided by Deputy Governor Thomas Dale to her romance with Gentleman John Rolfe, Snyder makes a strong case that this was no forced conversion to a cultural English religion, rather a real experience with Jesus Christ through people who followed him, through the witness of Scripture, and by the grace of God. Snyder does not pull any punches. He portrays the English realistically in all of their own shortcomings and sin. Yet he argues forcefully that Pocahontas, who chose the biblical name Rebekah (from Genesis 24-25) at her baptism, was discerning enough to understand human depravity and still accept the truth of the Gospel. This is a must read for students of Pocahontas, the first permanent settlements in America,as well as those who are interested in the history of cross-cultural missions.
