About the Author

Jay D. White is the Reynolds Professor of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska–Omaha. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles, book chapters, and books in public administration. He is a former Fulbright Scholar at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.

To some extent this is an interesting book, but on the other hand
it has its - even disturbing - weaknesses, e.g. far too many
acronyms, which deteriorate this book's usability and readability.

If you have rats or mice, buy this book!
By Mets fan
Bobby Corrigan, with a doctorate in rodentology, is the country's top expert in eliminating rodent problems. He was an exterminator then went back to school and eventually got his doctorate from Purdue, and has been teaching and consulting ever since. He is a student of rats -- he even spent time living in a rat-infested barn to understand rats and their habits better.

New York CIty probably has the worst rat and mouse problems in the country, and to increase the skills of their inspectors and private exterminators they started a yearly Rat Academy, which Corrigan teaches. What better endorsement would you need?

This book is full of tips and principles that will be useful not just to professionals but also to homeowners (because if you have rats, especially, you will want to get rid of them even more than your exterminator wants to get rid of them). Read this book and you will know if your exterminator is doing a good job, and you can give some gentle advice -- or get rid of them -- if they're not.
To put it another way, rats are probably the toughest problem that exterminators face, and with this book you will greatly increase the odds of a permanent solution.

While it doesn't come out in the book Corrigan is also very funny -- just watch some of his youtube videos. The videos are no substitute for the book, though.

This book is like many other PCT manuals. Very in-depth approach to controlling critters and learning how to create a good process. I'd recommend to many technicians and/or owners to give it a good read.

Great for property or facilities manager

This is a great book if you manage property and want to know how to control rodents. Corrigan is excellent at explaining how to identify methods of finding rodents (rats and mice) and how to control. The book is written for the pest control operator, property or facilities manager.

I'm a neuroscience professor and I'm always looking for good, readable books on the subject for students and non-neuroscientist friends. This one is great! It gives a little taste of everything you'd cover in an intro neuroscience course, just in much less detail. It is clear and fun to read AND gets stuff right!

Great Introduction to the Subject

I've never been a huge fan of the dummies series as I work in digital design and there are better publishers out there for that kind of material, but when looking for an introductory volume to the subjects of neurology and neuroscience there aren't a lot of choices. You have encyclopedic text book volumes or shorter oversimplified books that skip a lot of technical detail. I found this book while browsing in a bookstore and thought it had just the right balance of overview and detail without pressing my 'overload' button, something fairly easy to do with a topic like neuroscience. I just finished the book last night and am very glad I purchased it. Over the years I have studied sleep research, psychology, altered states of consciousness, and other things which gave me some rudimentary background in understanding brain states and the mind/body connection, but it's nice to have finally rounded some of this more fringe material out with a basic book on neuroscience. I would recommend the kindle edition as it's nice to be able to read this on all my different devices and while on the go

Didactic and intersesting book

I'm a physicist in my profession and never studied biology, but neuroscience seemed very interesting to me and I wanted to study the basics just for fun. I was afraid that my lack of knowledge in biology would make a systematic study of this topic very hard for me and therefore was very glad to find a book called "For Dummies".
The book did not disappoint me. It is very interesting, didactic and neatly organized. I have no tools to examine the knowledge I got as I was never (and probably never will be) examined about it or have to use this knowledge in my everyday life, but my own feeling is that I got the basic ideas. (However, The last time I was afraid of something, I was able to analyze the overall neural circuit in my brain and associate some physical feelings to the hypothalamus...)
The book has some minor drawbacks. A few terms are used before they are defined (the first time I sat the world "thalamus" its meaning was a mystery for me). There is no chapter (or any other reference in the in the book) about human sexuality, which is a very interesting topic. In the chapter about neurons the text addresses the reader to "every basic biology book" to get some basic knowledge about the structure of cells, and as I had no biology book in my bookshelf at home, I read the Wikipedia article, which is encyclopedic and not didactic, instead. A brief summery, instead, could be useful.
The bottom line - a good book. Absolutely worth the reasonable price.

Great entry-level business stats book

People should stop posting reviews with those reviews based on the condition of the book received, the shipping speed, etc. You should rate the seller based on this information. The reviews here should be product-focused and based on the content of the product, value for the money, etc.

Anyways, I am completely surprised at the negative reviews for prior editions. I needed an entry-level business stats book to refresh my understanding of applied statistics before taking a more advanced graduate-level course. This book was excellent for my purpose. It lends itself well to self-study. It does present the math and formulas but doesn't overwhelm you with them. Instead it focuses on application and interpretation, which is what every book should focus on given the multitude of software programs available. There are many, many examples to reinforce the material presented. The solutions manual is also great. Very colorful and modern. The text is also succinct.

I subtracted a star because (and I hope the authors are reading these reviews)...there needs to be integration of other software packages besides Excel and Minitab. I think the authors made a good decision in moving away from in-text integration of Minitab and focusing more on Excel, but the reality is that they need to support other packages like JMP, SPSS, etc.

Otherwise, the authors did a great job, and helped me to prepare for my graduate course after a significant absence from statistical work.
