Edited by

Rhona Flin, BSc, PhD, FRSE, FBPsS, holds the chair of Applied Psychology and is the director of the Industrial Psychology Research Centre at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. She was involved in the NOTECHS project to develop a non-technical skills rating tool for pilots, and supervised the ANTS, NOTSS, SPLINTS and ANTS-AP projects. She was awarded the Roger Green Medal for Human Factors in Aerospace (Royal Aeronautical Society) and the John Bruce Medal for Behavioural Science in Surgery (Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh). Her current research is on non-technical skills, surgeons’ intra-operative decision making and senior managers’ safety leadership.

George G. Youngson, CBE, MBChB, PhD, FRCPEdin, FRCSEd is an emeritus professor of paediatric surgery at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He is a past vice president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is the founder of its Patient Safety Board. His interests and contributions have included re-configuration of children’s surgical services in Scotland, surgical education, and clinical human factors as they affect surgical performance. He has been involved in the delivery of the NOTSS masterclass in various continents, including Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

Steven Yule, MA, MSc, PhD, is an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr Yule is an Organizational Psychologist and Human Factors scientist. He has been involved in the development of a number of assessment tools including NOTSS, SPLINTS and the Surgical Leadership Inventory (SLI). He has led the development of curricula in non-technical skills for surgical trainees and practising surgeons in the United Kingdom and United States. Dr. Yule is the director of education & research at the STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where the current research focus is on demonstrating the impact of surgeons’ non-technical skills on process and outcomes, and implementing scalable interventions to enhance patient safety. He is the vice chair of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) committee on non-technical skills and also on faculty at both the Center for Surgery and Public Health and Ariadne Labs for Health System Innovation, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital/ Harvard School of Public Health.

Its self-contained treatment allows readers to skip the mathematical material which is concentrated in a few sections. Exposition focuses on the least median of squares technique, which is intuitive and easy to use, and many real-data examples are given. Chapter coverage includes robust multiple regression, the special case of one-dimensional location, algorithms, outlier diagnostics, and robustness in related fields, such as the estimation of multivariate location and covariance matrices, and time series analysis.

great book on an interesting topic

These authors provide an excellent guide to the available theory of robust regression. Graphical methods are well used to bring home the points. I have always liked looking at outliers and robustness from an influence function viewpoint and the authors do an excellent job of describing that theory.

The book came out in 1987 and so it is a little dated. Another reviewer criticizes some of the software that is mentioned. With computer methodology advancing so rapidly one should not expect the state-of-the-art in computing from a 14 year old text. Value it for its exposition and development of the theory.

Easy to follow introduction

Why should I read this book?
- The introduction alone is worth half the price of this book. It gives you a very good overview of robust estimators like m-estimators, least median of squares and least trimmed squares. Basically, you could just take the introduction and start implementing, if that's what you want. The author is able to tell how this and that method overcomes a problem and for what price, and all in one paragraph.
What do I need to understand this book?
- The math in this book is kept at an engineer's level, so an introductory course on statistics should be enough to follow the introduction and to get an insight into the following chapters. A lot of examples with real life data and nice plots show how the methods perform.
What's the drawback?
- The author talks a lot about his old-school fortran program called 'PROGRESS' - and eventually comes up with screen dumps (when people were still using terminals) of the program output. Worth Reading!

The recent events in my life had filled me with loads of negative thoughts. After the death of my father, I deeply felt the need to be revived and urged for getting a positive outlook about my life. It was then that I accidentally came across this book named, "Positive Living through Positive Affirmations," written by Sylvester Renner and somehow found the new path for my life to follow. This book provided with the required resources for filling the positivity in my life. While exploring this book, I came across more than 1200 affirmations of positivity, which reprogrammed my mind with positive thoughts. This book renewed my life completely and I somehow felt charged enough to cope up with the worst phase of my life.
Reading this book has changed my perspective towards life and affected my subconscious mind positively. Ever since I had been reading this book, I have witnessed tremendous changes in my daily habits, reactions, and lifestyle. Today, I feel happy about my life and my own self. The excessive pressure at my work place had taken a toll on me. Of late, this pressure at the professional front had started affecting my life on the personal front too. My kids were scared of me as I used to get irritated and angry most of the times. My wife was tired of pacifying me and could see no light in this dark tunnel of negativity. It was then that my in-laws gifted me this book, named, "Positive Living through Positive Affirmations."
Initially, owing to my tormented state of mind, I declined reading this book. But, after continued persuasion from my wife, I finally succumbed to turning over the book for once. The excessive negativity in my life had blocked all the paths for ray of positivity to enter. As I started reading this book, with every passing day, my life started following a new path; the path filled with positivity.
This book encompasses positive affirmations on different categories including health, family, goals, etc. Enchanting and meditating on these affirmations, have filled me with the energy to tackle the work pressure and do away with the negativities in life. The book approaches affirmations from Christian perspective without being preachy and does a marvelous job of merging self talk with Christian spirituality. I like all the different categories, even though they wander off subject often they are still exceptionally life affirming truths that are the foundation of a positive mindset. About the Author
Steinberg is Professor of Psychology at Temple University, where he directs the university's program in Developmental Psychology. He has taught previously at Cornell University, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was educated at Johns Hopkins University and Vassar College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors and distinction in psychology; and at Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in human development and family studies. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association.

Great material, but...

I think this book does a wonderful job taking readers through biological, cognitive, and relationship changes during adolescence. I was really impressed by the inclusion of the latest research modifying Piaget's theories. I agree with other users saying this book was repetitive, but sometimes the repetition was the topic as viewed from different perspectives (ex: Baumrind's authoritative parenting and how it applies to education-teaching, education-administrative policies, education-poverty-stricken neighborhoods, education-self esteem issues, education-hormonal changes, etc.).

I would have given it four stars, except that the author tends to loose objectivity when discussing hot-button topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and contraception. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book!

Good Adolescent Book

I needed this book for my adolescent psychology course. It was very informative and a good value. As a new parent, I found great insight into child development and think any new parent may appreciate this.

Okay for classroom

This was required for a class I took this past semester. The book was okay for the material, but it was also repetitive and a little dull. The graphs and figures were most useful.
