A nailbiter of a tale

This was a tough read, at least for me. I don’t mean in terms of content or writing – they’re spectacular – but Ben and Jonah are a walking duo of tragedy through a lot of the story. They’re frustrated, and frustrating, but also beautiful and brave, as well as gritty and forced into decisions that continue to slice and scar them both. Some of this is self-inflicted, though sometimes with “good” reason, and some they force upon each other. Some is beyond their control at all. I was about half way through and I really had no idea where it was all going, how it was going to end up. KJ Charles made me work, just like Ben and Jonah had to work. Hard.
It also took me awhile to get a handle on each of these men. They traded places all throughout, and each of those places was either revelatory or cloaked in uncertainty. When Jonah was keeping things to himself, keeping himself hidden, Ben would be having it out with himself by way of internal arguments about Jonah, his job, his life. Then it was Ben’s turn to close off himself, putting distance between himself and everyone, and Jonah would lay it all out on the line, no hesitation, nary a guessing game to be had. Jonah told Ben exactly how he was feeling, while Ben clammed up. More on that later.
I think the other thing that made it a challenge to figure out these two was the structure, especially in the first third of the story. I wouldn’t call them flashbacks but lengthy and detailed replaying of memories while still in current time. Everything was in constant motion, personalities and motivations swinging back and forth. It was at about that same halfway point where the emotional payoff began, making the frustration and need for patience well worth it.
Ben and Jonah knew each other from their first meeting, but they didn’t at all yet know the things that could help them keep heartache and devastating misunderstanding at bay. Only after suffering separation and overwhelming doubt, grasping breathlessly for hope, do they begin to put the pieces together. Ben learns more about Jonah’s past and the way his mind works, how he interprets the world and walks around in it. Jonah learns more about Ben and the way he needs the world to work, including how to love a windwalker.
Just as no one was there to teach Jonah how to live by not stealing, neither did he get instruction on how not to outright say how he feels. He tells Ben when he’s scared, what exhilarates him, his reasons for doing the things he’s done. No hemming and hawing, no circling around the truth of it all, he lays it all out there.
You wouldn’t have to read The Charm of Magpies series prior to reading this but I highly recommend that you do so. Not just for the characters in common but for what they represent and the role they play, particularly in bolstering Jonah’s case and bringing Ben to a place where he’s willing to fight for it. One scene in particular from the series connects several important motivations for both Ben and Jonah.
What a whirlwind of a story this is. There’s so much more I am resisting in saying because every bit would constitute spoilers. Utterly. Just know that the entire journey is worth it, along with some of the best dialogue over which I had the pleasure of giggling and snorting.

Another great book from K.J. Charles!

Warning: Though this is billed as a standalone, it really is an offshoot of The Magpie Lord series. It works best if you read it after reading Flight of Magpies because, honestly, many plot points of that book are spoiled in Jackdaw. Read with caution if you aren't caught up on your Lord Crane/Stephen hotness!
I'm not a huge fan of established couple stories but I really enjoyed this one. Maybe I'm being a little misleading: Jonah and Ben aren't an established couple, not exactly, but rather a couple that gets back together after a time apart. Jonah was the slippery man that I wanted to strangle in Flight of Magpies, and I was curious to see how he would be redeemed. I shouldn't have had any doubts: K.J. Charles is a magician.
I loved the level of intensity between Ben and Jonah. Their relationship felt so charged, so important. There were sky-high highs and crushing lows, and I was on the roller-coaster with them all the way. I thought that these two men felt like a perfect match, and I was rooting for them hard.
This story, again, has a good amount of action. I was breathless in anticipation of what would happen next, and hoping against all hopes that these two men would catch a freakin' break! I also loved when Jonah got to play around with his wind-walking skills, and we got to see his huge personality come through. It felt dangerous and exhilarating, which I adored.
I did miss seeing the start of Jonah and Ben's relationship, other than in flashback. Flashbacks always feel "blah" to me, and the starts of a love story tend to be my favorite parts. Also, this book was a little less erotic than her other works. However, I was very satisfied with this one and I think all fans of The Magpie Lord series will be too.

Magpie Spinoff

You first meet Jonah in Flight of Magpies, and wish him ill. And then you read this and realise that most of what you knew was a confluence of circumstance, bad decisions, and soul-bonding love. Without Ben, for Ben, knowing it would cost him Ben; the motivations for Jonah's actions in Flight of Magpies.
I love Stephen and Lucien, but I'm pretty sure I love Jonah and Ben more. There's just something about their past, and joining their story at what you think is the end but is actually the beginning that makes them perfect. They're both flawed, both holding onto the past, and both so completely in love with each other that it's heartbreaking. I cried when Jonah said "I just want you to love me again." Absolutely perfectly timed. Their past, and the pain it caused, should prove an impossible hurdle, but instead it's the foundation the need to start forever.
Also: it was nice to see Crane being the calm voice of reason. Perhaps Stephan has learned to moderate emotional justice with truth justice. I suspect, however, that without Crane's presence the outcome would been quite different.
