aspects of being a programmer

Programming is not for everyone. Yet Vickers explains that it can be tackled in a systematic fashion. He covers various aspects of what it means to be a programmer. At the deepest level, you need to be able to think in terms of algorithms. And don't let that word scare you. This has several parts. One of which is to be able to decompose a problem into smaller parts, until each can be tackled adequately. Then you have to stitch all these together into a coherent program.

Another aspect is rigour. Unlike some qualitative and subjective fields, like art, you must think precisely. As precisely as possible. To some extent, the ability to decompose a problem into subproblems lets you do some handwaving. But programming is characterised by you eventually having to sit down and code some solution exactly.

En route, the book discusses the use of pseudocode. As formal or informal as your requirements and experience dictate. One need is to be able to write such pseudocode as the first step in doing a problem. The next is to then manually translate that into actual compilable source code.

First cookbook I have ever bought!

I have never really cooked before but I spotted Donal on This Morning on ITV a few weeks ago and wanted give the cookbook a try... The book really doesn't disappoint with loads of favourites which I just never had the recipe for and then lots of stuff I had never tried before like lamb shanks and spatchcock chicken... I've basically been cooking my way through the book and loving every second of it- I would highly recommend the book and hope that you enjoy it as much as I have!

Having over ten years’ experience in online education as both an online PhD Student and teaching and designing online courses at many different types of online colleges and universities, I feel that this book entitled, “Articulate Storyline Essentials,” by Ashley Chiasson, is a much needed book/resource for online educators who design online courses.

In designing many different types of online courses (geography, cultural diversity, environmental science, and strategies for success), I often heard the term “storyline” used by many online course instructional designers and never really knew what they meant until reading this book. I wish a book like this was published and that I could have read it before helping to design many of my courses as a SME (Subject Matter Expert).

This book really can help anyone interested in designing an online/e-learning course by creating and using the storyline format through articulation of one’s overall ideas and previous and current content. This book nicely shows how you can create and use such a storyline to create successful e-learning online courses and resources. The use of templates was very beneficial.
More specifically, this book can help one create a storyline from previous content on PowerPoint or other multimedia like images and pictures. Specifics are given on how to use other mediums like MS Word to create a storyline to be used in the actual creation of an online course. Also, how to publish storylines to the web and or LMS (Learning Management Systems).

One great thing about this book is that it is not just dry boring text as the author uses many different screenshots and images to help show the reader how exactly to create a storyline. Everything is hands on which makes it really easy to follow and practice as you go along.

My only suggestion would be to list some examples of actual online courses and resources that used this storyline method in creating that individual course. Also, to provide some more videos to follow along, not just screenshots.

And finally, I know now after reading this book that I will be able to help design online courses more easily and more effectively as well as efficiently.

A good introduction to Storyline

Overall, I liked this book, and it does cover all the basics of Storyline. This is very much a book that goes through the features, and I have no doubt it will help anyone to get started in Storyline, and prefers a book format over the online lessons available from Articulate.
I think an "Essentials" book suffers from the decision of what IS an "essential"?
For example:
1. In the section on Markers, why leave out that Markers can be used in "Audio only" mode, (taking advantage of the many graphical images you can select), and use them for Triggers?
2. When talking about saving files, one of the most frequent Forum Hints is filename length - why not include this?
3. Explaining that if you include Hotspots, and then export to Word, you will have to explain to reviewers about the "nasty green blobs" and they will not show when the course is published, (I have had this issue many times).

Of course it is an arbitrary decision what to include, but I am hoping that some of these more "value add" elements, including some conceptual elements like WHY we do certain things in Storyline can be included in the Advanced book which is mentioned.
There are a few formatting issues I would like to see addressed by the publishers - specifically zoom a few more of the images, and make sure the red boxes do not cover the content they are trying to illustrate, but overall this is a great book that would help someone starting in the world of Articulate Storyline authoring.

I have been using storyline for Last 2 years and I usually learn e-learning programs by reading books. I was asked to review this book and this is my honest review. It seems like the person wrote the book just to write a book. The only real thing I liked was that it was a very conversational book and easy to follow. The book seemed way to basic for an essentials book. Everything the author talked about is easily found on the Articulate website and with more detail. The book could have been half the size if the screen shots where actually of just the areas that she was talking about and not the entire storyline interface. Also, most people learn by doing. There were no exercises to follow along with. I actually got more out of the book she references and I review previously Learning Articulate Storyline.

MOHAMED E. Don't buy this book

Don't buy this book... It is obviously written by someone (no author name is included) who had some other, non related, review book already made and tried to tailor it to the NCMHCE. It is not at all comprehensive. The content covered in the book is completely unrelated to the exam...covering biopsychology, credentialing, education, training, and statistics to name a few- none of which are actual content areas on the exam. Then things that should be covered, common treatments, assessment measures and tests, and interventions are not covered directly or comprehensively. There is a practice test (the only part I ended up using), which I am pretty sure has some mistakes in it, based on contradictions in the answer explanations. For example one scenario stated that the MSE was appropriate, but in the explanation as to why, they described an entirely different test. There is a section that covered Diagnoses, which is okay, but I find the DSM-V way more straightforward. How this book is rated so high on Amazon is completely beyond me.

Nearly as frustrating as house-crushing tree services.

The only purchase I have been more disappointed in was when a team hired to cut down three trees in our back yard dropped one on our house.

I have taken the exam, and this study guide is useless -- a total waste of money and time. It is poorly written, with grammatical errors and confusing sentence structure. For example: "Elderly can experience a range of emotions whenever loss or death occurs." Not "The elderly" just "Elderly." Never mind why we are wasting ink stating the obvious. If a candidate for licensure really needs to be told that people of all ages experience emotions in response to loss, we have some fundamental problems.

This study guide also contains long passages of information that have nothing to do with the exam, like the "history of professional certification," "CACREP accreditation," or how to lobby congress (not joking). But more important and salient information, like HIPPA, is only given a glance: "Ask your attorney to explain your HIPPA duties." The authors, if this study guide was in fact written, not generated by Microsoft's Twitter bot, have far more important information to include, like: "The first recorded use of cocaine in the U.S. was as tea in 1596 by the Spaniards."

It also contains poorly researched or incomplete information. For example, Brief Crisis Intervention Therapy is a controversial treatment, and some studies indicate is may have harmful effects long-term. Is this mentioned in the description of the therapy? No, it is not. Massive passages in this text have absolutely no citations. It also contains crushing generalizations. In the cultural competency section, two pages after stating that "The [Mental Health Counselor] must not generalize any culture too much," the text goes on to say "African Americans and Asian cultures have firm beliefs that the person should solve the problem with the help of family members. However, to seek help outside of the family is unthinkable." No much-needed qualifiers here.

Do not purchase this study guide, unless you have a Masochism Fetish. Or if you want an ugly, $50 paper weight. I am stopping the cycle here and composting mine, rather than passing it on to a new victim. I expect great, redemptive satisfaction upon seeing our earthworms poop it out, and watching it nourish our winter greens.

About the Author
Andy Grundberg is a critic, curator, and teacher in Washington, D.C., where he is the associate dean of undergraduate studies and chair of photography at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. From 1981 to 1991, he was an art critic for the New York Times, for which he continues to write today.

thank you so much for reprinting this! I wanted this book when first got interested in photography, but the prices for the out-of-print classic were too high.

i love love LOVE this book.

enough has been written about these images, the artist, the process, the subject, etc... so that leaves me with my experience. i will just say that my appreciation of this work has developed in concert with the depth of my understanding of visual art. there are other photographers who are more exquisite and others who are more lovely/human, but this work is the closest thing to perfection i know.

For those who are relatively new to negotiation, the book offers an overview of the various contexts (deal making, dispute resolution, multicultural and team decision making, social dilemmas, and negotiations between government and foreign direct investors) and building blocks of negotiation strategy. It then focuses specifically on negotiation strategy and culture, how negotiation is practiced in different cultures and why, and what the negotiator crossing cultural boundaries can do to modify strategy so as to realize interests and maintain integrity even when confronted with a very different cultural approach to negotiation.

Old familiar negotiation concepts, such as power and interests, take on different meaning in different cultures. In Negotiating Globally, award-winning negotiation expert Jeanne M. Brett discusses three primary cultural prototypes: dignity culture (familiar as Western culture), face culture (familiar as East Asian culture), and honor culture (which characterizes cultures in the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America), comparing and contrasting these cultural prototypes with respect to the nature of self-worth, power, sensitivity to insults, confrontation style, trust, and mindset, with the purpose of generating insight and understanding as to why negotiators in these cultural types use strategy similarly or differently. About the Author

JEANNE M. BRETT is a founder and director of the Dispute Resolution Research Center at the Kellogg School of Management. She has over 25 years of experience as a researcher and trainer in the areas of deal making, decision making, and dispute resolution. As the DeWitt W. Buchanan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Dispute Resolution and Organizations at Kellogg, she has trained managers and executives around the world in the preeminent Kellogg negotiation methods. She is coauthor of Getting Disputes Resolved: Designing Systems to Cut the Costs of Conflict.

Jeanne Brett provides a clear, detailed summary of the emerging research on the three major ethnic cultures around the globe, showing how each influences negotiation in ways we are just beginning to understand. She ties together state-of-the-art approaches on negotiation with leading-edge theories on global cultures. I found her explanations and examples very helpful in furthering my understanding of this complex area, especially in the first three chapters. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to enhance their knowledge of the field.
