If you have bad breath, bleeding gums, cavities, or tooth pain—you need this book! If you suffer from asthma, diabetes, arthritis, migraine headaches, or any chronic illness, and have not found relief, this book could have the solution you need. All disease starts in the mouth! As incredible as it may seem, most of the chronic and infectious illnesses that trouble our society today are influenced by the healthy of our mouths. Our mouths are a reflection of the health inside our bodies. If you have poor dental health, you are bound to have other health problems. Despite regular brushing and flossing, over 90 percent of the population has some degree of gum disease or tooth decay. Most people aren’t even aware they have existing dental problems. Recent research has demonstrated a direct link between oral health and chronic illness. Simply improving the health of your teeth and gums can cure many chronic problems. More brushing, flossing, and mouthwash isn’t the solution. What will work is Oil Pulling Therapy. Oil pulling is an age-old method of oral cleansing originating from Ayurvedic medicine. It is one of the most powerful, most effective methods of detoxification and healing in natural medicine. In this book, Dr. Fife combines the wisdom of Ayurvedic medicine with modern science. The science behind oil pulling is fully documented with references to medical studies and case histories. Although incredibly powerful, Oil Pulling Therapy is completely safe and simple enough for even a child.

It works for me
By Beer Pongger
After oil pulling with coconut oil first thing in the morning for 6 weeks(but I also brush and floss) my dental hygienist was flabbergasted at how my mouth and teeth had improved. No plaque and my teeth color did not deteriorate since my last visit. My teeth coloring was one major problem I have always had-extra work to whiten but made the dentist richer. Since beginning oil pulling, I only have to go every 6 months instead of 4 months. In the future I will probably go yearly instead now that my mouth is great. Since I will not have dental insurance for long, this little book has become a marvelous money saver too. I have always enjoyed history and Dr. Fife's clear writing of the connection between oral hygiene and the onset of many illnesses is illuminating, and just plain fun!
As an extra aside, I bit my tongue (ouch!!) which needed 2 stitches (ouch ouch!!). I Oil Pulled several times a day which soothed the injury. I do not know if my injured tongue healed more quickly with oil pulling but it is good as new.
I also oil pull with coconut oil for a few minutes only after having a good cigar. No matter how 'good' my cigars are, my mouth has a little tingle afterwards. The oil pull soothes my mouth.
UPDATE: 4/19/2011. I just came back from my dental exam. It turns out my gums have 'grown' back around 2 of my teeth. Once a year, my gums get measured for any gum receding(recession?). Most of my mouth has a 2 or 3 rating which is good. Apparently there were 2 spots though that had a 4 rating from last year. These spots all improved to a 3!!. I asked how that is possible and was informed that keeping the mouth extra clean along with flossing created the environment for my gums to thrive. To me, these numbers are evidence that oil pulling does the trick. By the by, I continue to not have any plaque. Again, I attribute oil pulling as the major factor. I used to brush and floss x2/day but still had moderate plaque. Believe it!!!
Jan 6, 012: It has been 8 1/2 months since my last general exam. My hygienist asked how I liked my electric toothbrush. I told her I only use a manual. She looked at me surprised. She said my teeth and gums look like I use the electric because they are so clean. She also noticed that teeth were not stained since I did not smoke many cigars this year which was true due to horrible hot summer. She cleaned and polished them and after the dentist looked I went on my way. Oil pulling continues to improve my mouth!!!
Feb 4, 2014: Hello there!... I''m back with an update. I have returned to my dentist after one full year due to sudden tooth pain. I continue to oil pull every morning for 20 minutes and brush and floss x2/day. A full exam was done but exam was quick. No plaque and gums are good. Dentist has this new spray that cleans teeth instead of usual cleaning method. Hygienist says I brush very good including in the back. This I attribute to my oil pulling in the back of the mouth. very easy. there has been some pain in the back . X-rays taken. No infection of nerve damage so dentist recd I return in 6 months as a preventative...I agreed. best to spend a few bucks to be safe but will concentrate oil pulling in the painful region in case germs are hiding. Take care everyone.
Sept 3, 2014. Time flies!. No plaque except way in the back of my mouth where it is hard to brush but not as bad as before. no plaque elsewhere. painful tooth continues but using special toothpaste. Just have to live w it. My dentist has the same problem. Gums still growing in some new areas. Take care.
Jan 4, 2016. Happy New Year. Was talking with a friend and she just happened to thank me for introducing her to Oil Pulling w coconut oil from about 2 years ago. She said her plaque has been reduced, her teeth are whiter and her teeth "deep pockets" have disappeared. Her dentist is amazed. Not too shabby, huh folks?

This book has changed my life
By Barbara Beach-moody
I read this book and began oil-pulling about 2 months ago. Since then I have reversed documented nerve damaged and avoided my 5th back surgery. My arthritis in my knees is much better. I have lost weight and my cellulite is going away. My teeth are whiter, my gum tighter. I feel more energetic, happier and optimistic than I have in years allowing me to get off some prescription meds. This is a program that is completely "no harm - no foul"! Over the years I have spent thousands of dollars chasing health and relief of 10 years of chronic pain. This program costs maybe 25 a day and a minimum of 20 minutes. I am blown away. I have shared this book with my dentist, doctors, surgeon, friends and family. Everyone sees some change - some faster some slower. I have noticed the more you pull the more changes you see. This book is a must for those who seek health!!!!

Improving your health is not supposed to be this easy
By Paul Lappen
Here is a safe and very easy way to vastly improve your health without special pills or diets. All it requires is swishing a spoonful of vegetable oil around your mouth for at least 15 minutes at a time.

Many scientific studies have chronicled a link between chronic illness and the health of our mouths (the book references over 150 such studies). Think about it; our mouths are constantly warm and moist, like a tropical rain forest, which is a great breeding ground for germs. They are also open to the outside, so it is very easy for bacteria to enter our mouths and take up residence. From there, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel to any part of the body. There it can cause anything from arthritis to constipation to eczema to hypertension to sinusitis (all of which have been reported as responding to oil pulling).

What do you do? Take a tablespoon of nearly any vegetable oil (the author recommends coconut oil) and swish it around your mouth for several minutes, then spit it out. That's all. Teeth are very porous, full of tiny tubules where the bacteria can hide. Brushing, flossing or mouthwash will not clean out those tubules; oil pulling will. This is not a cure for whatever ails you. Oil pulling simply removes the infection from your mouth so that your body's natural healing properties can do their job.

This is totally safe for children and pregnant women, as the only ingredient is vegetable oil. It can also be done several times a day, if necessary. If you experience side effects, like coughing up mucus, or the sudden onset of what feels like the flu, don't worry about it; it's your body cleaning itself out. Also, don't worry if you don't see any immediate improvement in your health; some people simply heal faster than others. Also, after you are done swishing, do not swallow; spit it out. You don't want to remove the bacteria from your mouth, just to deposit it in your stomach.

Improving your health is not supposed to be this easy. This book is very easy to read for anyone, and is very highly recommended.

This book understands ADHD in a compassionate, easy to comprehend way
By Ali
This book is amazing. The author totally understands what ADHD looks like- not just about being distracted and I'm so glad to have found a book that gets that! I am a child therapist and integrate this into my treatment for my elementary aged clients with ADHD. Kids really resonate with the main character without feeling judged. I read it with a client multiple times and they often reference it long after we stop reading it. It's open ended enough that you can include some extra activities to go along with it to enhance learning- I've had kids make their own remote control for more integrated learning, I read it to the kids because(especially kids with ADHD) reading can be a challenging activity and create frustration and that isn't the point of this book, Vivid pictures and I would definitely buy again. Great for kids, therapists, teachers, parents and anyone wanting to have more understanding of ADHD.

A couple of spelling errors, but overall an AMAZING program and useful social story =)
By Christiana Santos
I love this program and I use it all the time as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. I modify the language and shorten the text when working with younger kids. It works so well with kids that have self-control and regulation issues. My only problem with this book is a couple of spelling errors I noticed as I was reading it with the kids. One in the beginning and the other in a later section of the book. Please fix those, and then this will be perfect!! =) I recommend this program to everyone, so I want this product to be flawless.

Great Book For ADHD Kids and Their Parents
By JavaMama
My son's therapist recommended "Hunter" to us and the concept impressed me from the get-go. The author truly has latched on to something that works for ADHD kids. My only critique, is that the remote control has a two, too many buttons. How do I know that? Well, I can't remember all of the buttons. :) If I can't remember all of them, my son certainly won't be able to. Also, the book is also about 2-4 pages too long. His attention span wavered when we got to the "coaching" part. If it could be shortened just a bit and the remote control simplified, it would be spot on. Well done!

Spirited Adaptation of a Minor Christmas "Classic"
By John Miller
There's a reason that L. Frank Baum's "A Kidnapped Santa Claus" has always been less than classic when it comes to Christmas tales: The mythology is too much to grasp in the span of a short story. The "daemons" that kidnap Santa go by the names of Selfishness, Envy, Hatred, and Repentance (a fifth, Malice, is not included in Robinson's adaptation). As a way to teach children the perilousness of vices, "A Kidnapped Santa Claus" would seem to have a daunting task.

Baum goes several steps further, though, complicating matters with layers of original mythology. His Santa doesn't live at the North Pole--instead, he lives in Laughing Valley on the border of the Forest of Burzee. Instead of elves, he's assisted by knooks, ryls, fairies, and pixies. Over the course of Baum's novel "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus," things are easier to understand. As a standalone tale, though, there's too much going on.

Comic book artist Alex Robinson does an admirable job, illustrating Baum's story with beautiful black-and-white line art. His original dialogue and creations are welcome additions, updating the story for modern readers. (One of the Santa's fairies, Wisk, is now a female with a crush on her co-worker Kilter, providing some much-needed humor.) Still, Robinson can't solve the central problem of the short story, which is that it is ends up too complicated for a children's book...and too silly for adults to appreciate. It's probably better suited to an animated film--it would be interesting to see what Tim Burton (or even Pixar or Dreamworks) could do with Baum's story, Robinson's new creations, and 90 minutes of screen time.

A fun premise and an quick read, this was a good story.
By Fire Dad ^6
From the creator of the Wizard of Oz, this is a quick read and a very short story about Santa being kidnapped. I picked up the book thinking it was a funny premise and I enjoyed the story. This is worth the read. 4 Stars

"Now we can cross the Shifting Sands." ~ final remarks of Lyman Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz" and this very tale
By Don Kidwell
"And all because of this person they call Santa Claus!" exclaimed the Daemon of Envy. "He is simply ruining our business, and something must be done at once." Enjoyable tale full of mystical creatures (reminiscent of those type found in the Oz books) as Santa is kidnapped by the evil Daemons and an army of knooks, dainty ryls, pixies, gnomes and nymphs march to the rescue! Book begins with a very good, short biography of the author before launching into the story, which I truthfully found interesting in and of itself as I had know idea prior how many great ideas Baum had only for them to falter as a result of being before the times or otherwise poorly planned. Of course, once "The Wizard of Oz" was published there was no looking back on success from that time forward. As for "A Kidnapped Santa Claus" it was a fine book that followed the publication of "Oz" 4 years earlier and definitely worth a read.

From this Thanksgiving to Christmastime I will only be reviewing Holiday books for your reading pleasure before drastically scaling back my reviews, so until such a time have a very, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology: The Digital Revolution and Schooling in America (Technology, Education--Connections (Tec)) (

The digital revolution has hit education, with more and more classrooms plugged into the whole wired world. But are schools making the most of new technologies? Are they tapping into the learning potential of today's Firefox/Facebook/cell phone generation? Have schools fallen through the crack of the digital divide? In Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology, Allan Collins and Richard Halverson argue that the knowledge revolution has transformed our jobs, our homes, our lives, and therefore must also transform our schools. Much like after the school-reform movement of the industrial revolution, our society is again poised at the edge of radical change. To keep pace with a globalized technological culture, we must rethink how we educate the next generation or America will be left behind. This groundbreaking book offers a vision for the future of American education that goes well beyond the walls of the classroom to include online social networks, distance learning with anytime, anywhere access, digital home schooling models, video-game learning environments, and more.

A Provacative Read that Opens up Lively Discussion
By Comedykaze
Collins and Halverson raise many legitimate points in this book, but there are also some points of contention that remain unresolved. Although this book proposes few definite answers, it opens up lively discussion for rethinking education in the information age, and it is an essential read for future educators because it outlines very convincingly that schools are following an outdated model and should be reformed. However, the solutions that Collins and Halverson propose will remain points of contention for time to come, and many people will remain skeptical.

This book does an excellent job of outlining the problem in an easy-to-understand way: In short, the school system as we know it was formed during the Industrial Revolution, and it is designed to efficiently transmit information from the teacher to the students in large numbers. It is clear that the Industrial Age is over, and we are now well into the Information Age, and we see youth becoming a lot more involved in exchanging information and knowledge over the web than before. Consequently, we are finding that students are learning much more in these informal environments because they are voluntarily engaging in information which they find interesting, so Collins and Halverson propose that education should become less institutionalized and more personalized.

Essentially, Collins and Halverson propose that technology allows personalized instruction to large numbers of students, and education should look more like home-schooling or apprenticeship, in which students decide the terms and conditions of their learning rather than following a prescribed route. This will promote a higher degree of specialization, and "just-in-case" learning would no longer be relevant. Because students would be focusing on what interests them, they would be more motivated to learn, but this model leaves many future educators uneasy.

However, this book also does a fair job of outlining what may be lost from that proposed model of education, but there are many possible losses that Collins and Halverson did not address or resolve. Some future educators ponder about what would happen to the generalists if this model of personalized online instruction takes place, but it is not likely that generalists would disappear, and in world with such good communication, there would not really be a need for them. Also, when it comes to educating students about prejudice, tolerence, and social justice, schools have been the most effective means because they provide a common space for a diversity of students to interact, but the book does not address this. And finally, this book mentions nothing about physical education. Schools are typically an excellent institution for students to get involved with physical activity and sports, and this book does not address it at all. Although I would not agree entirely with the proposed solutions, I believe this book is an overall worthwhile read that should be taken with a grain of salt.

One significant qualm that I have with this book is that I find it to be polarizing: It offers perspectives from Technology Enthusiasts and Skeptics without offering a middleground or even explain why or if these two sides are incompatible. The authors present both sides fairly, but it is pretty clear which sides the authors are on. Although these authors are highly knowledgeable and offer a lot of valuable insight, I treat this polarization only as an organizational tool that helps me read and digest information, so I take nothing at face value.

Nonetheless, I would recommend this to any serious educator or future educator because the insights provocative and valuable, but this book should not be read passively like a novel. Anybody who reads this should be prepared to critique this book very carefully and open up lively discussions about rethinking education.

How fast will changes occur?
By David Foster
Collins and Halverson have provided a timely and realistic perspective on educational technology that gets us past both the exuberant and the despairing views. There certainly is much more that can and should be said about the many topics they discuss, but I think they've successfully located the "core" of the matter, and with welcome brevity.

Being personally experienced in this field, I'd just offer two or three criticisms. The first is their assumption that interactive learning programs will play a large role in the future of education. I imagine that they eventually will, but after at least thirty years of research and experimentation with such environments, I am impressed by how limited their real-world success has been. The commercial successes have been in the teaching of math, but besides that there's still a surprising lack of good, usable programs.

Which leads to a more general comment about the way they characterize the "skeptics'" perspective. The authors stress the institutional obstacles, but I don't ever hear them acknowledge that making all these different ed tech ideas work "at scale" is much, much harder than it looks. We want to lament schools' intransigence, and cultural issues, and misguided policies about standards, and etc... but maybe most of what has been offered to schools is bad and unworkable. It doesn't _seem_ unworkable to most of us, but most of it really has been.

What may have been helpful in this book would have been an attempt, however speculative, at estimating the time frames likely to be involved in the proliferation of these new forms, i.e. learning centers, distance education, interactive simulations, certifications, etc. Are these changes 5 years away? 20? 100? The historical framework described by Collins and Halverson seems right, but I left wanting to hear more about their third "lifelong learning" era.

Still, I think the book is groundbreaking and will provide the basis for all future discussions about this topic. And, with these particular authors' reputation and experience, I am inclined to trust their vision more than I would if someone else had written it.

Can schools cope with the new technologies?
By Joseph Psotka
This is an excellent, thoughtful book about schooling and the changes in technologies: networks, cell phones, simulations and games; and their effects around the edges of school systems. The authors are a technologist and an educator and together they bring balance and insight into this formidable jungle of interwoven influences and possibilities. It is well worth reading if you too are a thoughtful parent or grandparent and want to prepare yourself and your children for the future. If you are a teacher or educational leader, you must read this book.

They are best at describing succinctly all the changes going on and the virtual absence of response by schools, who are "locked in place". Their short history of schooling in America is a glorious thumbnail of the important events that provides the dominant theme of transition between apprenticeship, didactic learning in the industrial age, and the beginnings of an information age that is in evolution. They think they discern the directions that are important, the changes nibbling at the edge of school systems, and they lay them out clearly under several headings such as home schooling, workplace learning, distance ed, adult ed, learning centers, internet cafes, interactive learning environments, technical certifications, and lifelong learning. Each of these are short and to the point, presenting just the main skeleton to sustain their arguments. Anything more and the reader would be bogged down in complexities.

For me, their main points are old hat. This is a history I have lived and am all too familiar with. I was surprised then to find a set of presecriptions that actually began to make sense of this morass and offered some hope for a real future. This then was the reason for the lucid but simplistic presentation of arguments that preceded their ideas for how schools may be able to cope. The proposals are well worth reading and thinking about. The main proposal they make is to create a national set of credentials that could be administered online on any learning center or school by trained professionals. Why this might work and why it is a good idea are admirably well explained in the book. It is worth a shot. I hope there are leaders out there who will take it, and I hope you will help them.

As a scientist, I cannot in all good conscience leave a good thing alone. I have to critique it to death. In order to simplify their arguments they have deliberately ignored what schools and new technologies are going to do in the next decade. This is perhaps with good reason. If you look at books like Nickerson's Technology in Education: 2020 written in 1988 you get a good idea why prognostication is risky. So much has happened they couldn't foresee that what they predict is only accurate because so little has actually changed in education while the world outside has been so transformed only Dick Tracy would recognize it.

Nevertheless, a book like this has to deal with future technologies if it wants to have any credibility for its policy recommendations. And there are so many possible or even likely changes that will undermine many of the themes in the book. Cell phones that are more than smart phones, but tv, media, social network, internet, workstation and library centers are obvious changes to come and they truly jeopardize these recommendations within the next 10 years. But computing itself is likely to change fundamentally from digital computers to neural computers that think and talk and engage students in converstations, companionship, learning assistants, and more. How long they will be in coming is not clear but in 10 years it will be very clear.

Of course, you don't need to know exactly what these changes in technology will be to begin to prosyletize for changes in the school system. The immediate changes described in this book should be enough to drive you to the local school board and demand some awareness and response. But it does not take much extrapolation to know that these changes are the leading edge of a seachange, and if we are as flexible and responsive as we think we are, it is time for us to assert ourselves as the creative class and demand new policies.
