A good read

I love this book. I had it in hardcover years ago but since lost it. I've read this book at least 6 or 7 times. As someone that a. loves a good romance and b. plays piano herself, I adored this book. It's funny, uplifting, heartbreaking, and tearjerking all throughout the book. I love it. A good read if you're looking for a quirky romance read but beware, it's a little sad.

All too convenient

Although the vast majority of the books I read are fiction, I also love reading about pianos and pianists. I was delighted to discover this book, which at least purported to be a novel about pianists. Alas, it was not really about piano playing at all. Instead, it was a rather trivial novel about a set of relationships some of which happened to involve piano playing. A novel that really focused on the talent of the heroine would have had to provide more of a basis for her excellence; instead, she emerges as a brilliant pianist almost from nowhere. There is no sense of the sweat and tears of learning to play piano at that level. The only inkling of the scope of the heroine's endeavor comes when we find out that the heroine suffers from intractable stage fright, a fright she overcomes with surprising ease when the perfect partner discovers her.
The romance aspects of this novel are also weak, as is the sense of the passing of time (almost none seems to pass). Solutions to problems--such as the long-term care needs of the father--leap out of the woodwork. Everything comes much too easily to the heroine, including her discovery of the love of her life waiting in the wings (where he has been for 22 years) when her piano partnership ends. Her traumas do not last long, and are all easily resolved, whether by a sudden and surprising injection of money, friendship or love.
Life is just not this easy, and a novel in which it is this easy almost inevitably lacks a sufficient sense of drama to be successful. This novel is no exception.

Another Great Love Story

I'm a sucker for a love story. Heart and Soul is just that and it is not a sappy one either. It is about Bess Stallone, a tough Long Island girl who just happens to be a gifted pianoist. She talks with a foul mouth, has a very good sense of humor, you can't help but like her.
David is a virtuoso known throughout the world. He is handsome and very famous, in need of a new partner at the piano. The long and short of the story is that he picks Bess and works with her as they become a pair on stage and off. She is so much in love with him and he her.
It is a story told before of course, girl from the wrong side of the tracks hooks up with the pretty boy. Same old story but this one really will grab you and touch you and also make you laugh. David is a tortured soul who ultimately caves in and falls apart as does their relationship. There are such tender moments though in this story.
Of course there is also Jake, her forever friend and the one who has always loved her since 7th grade and will be there for her at the end when she needs him.
I loved it. If you are looking for a good love story this is for you.

Well-rounded tutorial to the use of NDK

Although the name contains the word "cookbook", which to me says the book contains lots of small snippets, this book is actually a pretty much well-rounded tutorial on how to use the NDK. It starts off with setting up NDK on Windows, Linux and OSX, as well as a walkthrough of a hello world project.

The book doesn't tiptoe around the fact that you really can't make a purely native application on Android; even if you use the "native activity", the java virtual machine is still there, behind the curtain. So it's a good thing the book covers the communication between the VM and native code in detail. There is also a chapter that covers the "native activity" approach as well, where you don't necessarily need to worry about the java side.. as much.

Personally, I've only used printf debugging and Eclipse for NDK applications, so it was nice to find a chapter that covers different ways to build applications as well as different options for debuggers.

Plenty of pages are devoted to threading, which I found a bit odd. The book also touches on a bunch of APIs one might want to use from NDK, like zlib, OpenSL ES, OpenMAX AL and OpenGL ES. While the intro to OpenGL ES may be helpful to some, there are complete books about this subject that are better sources for that information.

Finally, there's a couple of chapters covering porting existing C code (libraries and applications) to Android and NDK. These are mostly step-by-step explanations of how to port some specific examples, where I would have preferred to see more of a list of things to keep in mind, pitfalls, what works, what doesn't, that sort of thing.

If you're a desktop application developer and want to get your stuff running on your Android phone, and only want to buy one book, the topics of this book pretty much cover everything that you need to know.

A fantastic journey into Android dark side

The book gives a very detailed and exhaustive description of entry-level, intermediate and advanced techniques that could be used with Android NDK. All chapters, that are more or less independent of each other, explore specific arguments of Android JNI and NDK aspects. For the first time I saw in an Android NDK book the description of OpenGL (2D and 3D) and OpenMAX technologies from a native point of view. This allow you to write Android applications with a very limited number of Java code lines!

In addition to that, the author describes a typical not documented approach in several other Android NDK books: the porting of an existing application to Android with NDK. This is a very useful chapter for people that could want to reuse existing libraries and applications written in C/C++ inside an Android one.

I have to say that this book is not for everyone. You need to be a good C/C++ programmer because there are several required knowledges that must be well known by the reader (multithreading, semaphores, mutex, OpenGL, exceptions, OpenMAX, and so on), but, if you are curious about Android NDK and native code for Android, there are surely some chapters (in my opinion only a few) that could be for a large audience.

In summary, I find the book perfect to make you a skilled Android NDK programmer! In addition, the two bonus chapters (available for download from website) are fantastic (I started reading the bonus chapters instead of the book!). If you love C/C++ language and in the same time you want to build applications for your Android device, this book is for you.

Nice recipes to follow to learn the NDK

This book is a nice introduction into NDK development on Android.
It's written in cookbook style: every example is build like a recipe. It gives a step by step introduction how to build all of them. Every chapter explains the starting steps again and which chapters should be read before trying that specific recipe.
One should follow those examples while reading. This is great when programming with the book next to you but also this makes it harder usable too look up something specific. Especially as only method signatures of API methods are shown but nearly no example code is printed. So you need to have the examples open in parallel. If you like this, this is your book.
The book also explains detailled steps how to setup the environment on different operating systems, it's written independent of any IDE so it builds on command line only.
Don't be afraid if you have not coded Android before. Android specific tasks are explained in depth i.e. taking a screenshot with adb or signing an android app. So the target audience is more the native developer than an android pro. But still for those it gives an idea how the NDK works. But the reader should have some knowlege about C/C++.

Learb all about valvetrains for a SBC

I have a 1995 LT1 in my Firebird, that I rebuilt, and so I wanted to learn more about the valvetrains and camshafts. As David Vizards says, ask 5 people what canshaft you should get and you will probably get 5 different answers. There is a lot to learn from this book, and I love David's approach, of let me try it and see what the results are. There are so many variables involved from what you want to end up with to how you intake, heads and exhaust all flow. David trys to help you sort it all out, but I have not been able to really get my brain wrapped around this subject yet. Not this books fault, just a lot for me to learn.

This is an excellent book...explains and illustrates the characteristics of a camshaft and how the rockers affect the cam timing. Lots of math. Takes some studying to clearly understand WHY the cam overlap effects combustion performance.

He covers things that de-mystify this often mis-understood area of hot rodding that you must know to go faster! Some things contradict "popular knowledge" or common myths and he tells you why. This man knows his craft. This is the one area that can have a HUGE impact on your overall engine performance and you had better understand the ins and out of valve-trains and camshafts. This book will teach you!

Gail E. Tompkins is Professor Emerita at California State University, Fresno. Another textbook

required for a class. I kept this one instead of selling it back, so I guess that says something. It was somewhat helpful during my student teaching since there are lots of good lesson plan ideas in it. Might be one you want to keep on your shelf if you're planning on teaching the lower elementary ages. Actual might make a good one for homeschoolers too.

I had to purchase this book for a class, honestly I like the book is filled with lots of information; the only down side is the price I found it much cheaper after making the purchase. I didn't wont to go through changes of returning it and waiting for it to credited on my charge card after knowing it was already shipped. I will truly say that was surprising for the date it was set for the book to come, it came within two days of placing my order,which was great,so I don't feel so bad after all GREAT purchase.

Nice to have on hand

This is my teenager's history text book. It is a large, heavy volume so we purchased it to keep at home. He wasn't doing his homework because the book didn't fit in his backpack with all his binders and other text books. Purchasing the extra book at a very reasonable price nipped that problem in the bud! No more excuses...

Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer black college graduates than would otherwise exist. And so it goes with everything from soft-on-crime laws, which make black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend.

In theory these efforts are intended to help the poor—and poor minorities in particular. In practice they become massive barriers to moving forward.

Please Stop Helping Us lays bare these counterproductive results. People of goodwill want to see more black socioeconomic advancement, but in too many instances the current methods and approaches aren’t working. Acknowledging this is an important first step.

Intellectual Renegade challenges Affirmative Action and more...

Can Affirmative Action and similar programs be hurting those it intends to help? To even raise this question will be puzzling to many of us, but social policies based on emotion and empathy, the ones that "feel" right, often have the worst unintended consequences. This book examines them all in detail.

I would say that Riley's thesis roughly boils downs to this: Affirmative Action and other well-intended programs are essentially training wheels for blacks. They may have had their place early on, but continued reliance on them is now more harmful than helpful. He does a thorough job researching relevant data and provides a strong case for this.

He reminds me of Dambisa Moyo, Zambian economist, who reveals to clueless Westerners that endless aid was actually hurting Africa by creating a culture of dependence and thwarting initiative and self-reliance. The same is true here in the US. In many large American cities, generations of black households have grown up on welfare, creating a distorted sense of expectations and entitlement. If you, your parents, and your grandparents were all substantially supported by government, why would you believe that anything else is likely, or even possible? If, on the other hand, like so many Asian-American success stories, you believe the only way to make it is study your tail off, and become self-reliant, then so many doors will be open to you in medicine, engineering, business, and more.

Riley really has his work cut out for him. There are more unquestioning drones in modern America than the skies of Afghanistan. He will be called all the usual names--Uncle Tom, Self-hater--used by the Politically Correct to punish those who color outside the lines. But if he can change the minds of just a few, create a few more black superstars like Ben Carson, etc, then it will be all worth it.

Based on the personal experiences of a successful Black man

Government "war on poverty" programs of the last 50 years have failed in spite of increasing expenditures. There appear to be limits on what the government can do beyond removing barriers to freedom. The focus on "equality of result" seems to be creating more barriers to progress.

The book examines the track record of various laws and programs and their undesirable consequences:

* Welfare programs that trap people in poverty.
* Affirmative active in higher education that results in fewer black college graduates.
* Minimum wage laws that price blacks out of the labor force.
* Soft-on-crime laws that make black neighborhood more dangerous.
* Limitations on school choice that trap students in failing schools

The book is well written, with many personal examples from the author's life. It reveals how black culture, more than anything, explains the continuing academic achievement gap between black and white. I highly recommend this book.

Very well researched and written. It presents another example of how patronizing aid oriented solutions destroy individuals and societies. It also shows a corresponding problem that frequently accompanies such so-called solutions, i.e., the individuals and organizations involved are often self-serving.
Other elements of this kind of so-called help are
1) that those giving it are generally unwilling to engage in sound socio-economic and cultural research to understand real causes of the problems they are trying to solve;
2) they are typically focused on programs rather than results;
3) they resist accountability for failed efforts and often engage in serious denial; and
4) they fail to let the recipients of the so-called assistance develop themselves by helping them develop their own solutions to the problems they face, thus denying them the dignity, respect and empowerment that is appropriate for people created in God's image.

Other scholars consider African American Studies multidisciplinary, a field somewhat comparable to the field of education in which scholars employ a variety of disciplinary lenses-be they anthropological, psychological, historical, etc., --to study the African world experience. In this model the boundaries between traditional disciplines are accepted, and researches in African American Studies simply conduct discipline based an analysis of particular topics. Finally, another group of scholars insists that African American Studies is interdisciplinary, an enterprise that generates distinctive analyses by combining perspectives from different traditional disciplines and synthesizing them into a unique framework of analysis.

Anderson and Stewart offer an idiosyncratic black studies textbook that will generate significant discussion in the field. The book posits transdisciplinary African American studies emphasizing the need to transcend traditional academic and disciplinary categories and to incorporate what the authors call indigenous knowledge--distinctive ways of knowing that historically have been shared by African-descended people. The authors are explicitly activist in their approach to the teaching of the field, raising questions and advancing analyses that are capable of leading to improvements in the well-being of people of African descent. Nine chapters cover the history and theoretical foundations of black studies; the history of blacks in the US; black American society and culture, psychology, politics, economics, and arts; and science and technology's impact on shaping race and racism. Each chapter ends withQuestions and Exercises highlighting key themes and perspectives,and the authors provide thorough footnotes so readers can easily to to the sources. An extensive 32-page bibliography includes social science classics from the early 20th century, Internet references from 2007,and hundred of other relevant sources. Summing up: Highly recommended. About the Author
Talmadge Anderson was professor emeritus of the Department of Comparative American Cultures and Marketing at Washington State University. He was the founder and former editor of the Western Journal of Black Studies, a professional journal in African American and African Studies. His publications include the volume Black Studies: Theory, Methods, and Cultural Perspectives and numerous articles that examine various dimensions of the African American experience. James Stewart was professor of Labor Studies and Industrial Relations and African and African American Studies at Penn State University, where he was formerly vice provost for Educational Equity and director of the black studies Program. He has written over seventy articles and has authored and co-authored, or edited and co-edited ten books, one of which is a collection of essays about Africana studies, Flight in search of Vision. He is a former editor of the Review of Black Political Economy and a former president of both the National Economic Association and the National Council for Black Studies.

this book was extremely informative and i have a better understanding of the issues involved. the author really explained the subject of the african american experience with intelligence and sophistication. i would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the african american culture!
