The next chapters are devoted to the music theory itself, as it developed in three stages: in the treatises of Aristoxenus and the Sectio canonis; during the period of revival in the second century C.E.; and in late antiquity. Each theorist and treatise is considered separately but always within the context of the emerging traditions. The theory provides a remarkably complete and coherent system for explaining and analyzing musical phenomena, and a great deal of its conceptual framework, as well as much of its terminology, was borrowed and adapted by medieval Latin, Byzantine, and Arabic music theorists, a legacy reviewed in the final chapter. Transcriptions and analyses of some of the more complete pieces of Greek music preserved on papyrus or stone, or in manuscript, are integrated with a consideration of the musicopoetic types themselves. The book concludes with a comprehensive bibliography for the field, updating and expanding the author's earlier Bibliography of Sources for the Study of Ancient Greek Music.

Eloquent, Timely!

This is a fascinating, accessible book for the general reader who wants to know the importance of the Islamic past for contemporary Muslims. Afsaruddin deals with amazing clarity how burning issues like the meanings of jihad, women's rights, and democracy are dealt with by both fundamentalists and modernists as each constructs the past in different ways. Not your typical work of punditry - the author is widely read and grounds her analysis in primary sources, often challenging established stereotypes. Check out p. 127 where the author takes down neo-con Bernard Lewis a peg or two. Highly recommended; eloquently written!

Interesting insights and worth reading, but should've been two books instead of one

Asma Afsaruddin's The First Muslims: History and Memory is a worthwhile read that offers interesting insights and perspectives on both the early history of Islam and on how that history has come to be viewed through the lens of memory. The lens of _selective_ memory more often than not, as Ms. Afsaruddin points out quite vividly, showing how various Islamic writers over the years have consciously edited and shaded the way they relate that history to support or promote their own particular take on how that history should be viewed.

My only real criticism of The First Muslims is that it doesn't go into sufficient depth, either in the section that deals with history or in the section that deals with how that history is viewed and interpreted, particularly in the current day. While I can appreciate the ambitious nature of what Ms. Afsaruddin was trying for, I think the reading public would've been better served by splitting the book into two separate books and then have each book go into greater depth. As it is, this book by itself feels insufficient to the task and while highly educational, left me feeling somewhat dissatisfied at the end, a niggling feeling that there should have been more to both sections in order to properly round things out and to give the subjects the treatment they deserve.

Highly recommended, with the caution that while it does a good job of framing the issue of history versus memory in Muslim perspectives, it falls short in giving the reader a full understanding of just how this has shaped the Muslim world as it exists today, and more importantly, where the lines of difference within the contemporary Muslim world are drawn.

This is perhaps the best book to offer as a starting place for a non-Muslim study of Islam. It delves into the sensibilities and convictions of the Prophet, his Companions and Successors in a very readable way. But then Prof. Afsaruddin goes further and connects the dots to the present moment in Islamic intellectual debate. Very good but . . .

On the positive side, this is the best unabridged German dictionary i have encountered:

o the dictionary is up-to-the-minute (e.g, many computer terms)
o the coverage is extremely good
o the dictionary has countless examples of the language in use
o the binding is good, the paper is ok (the interlinear spacing is a bit skimpy)
o the editing / proofreading is excellent
o the information provided for every entry seems to be exhaustive.

On the negative side,

o still somewhat from a British point of view (but not as bad as it used to be)
o still some feminist-inspired male bashing (males are violent chauvinist pigs and women are their victims) (but not as bad as it used to be)
o still some socialist bias ("the lockout should be made illegal") (but not as bad as it used to be)
o tabs would have been helpful for faster lookup

Excellent and up-to-date bilingual dictionary

This is an excellent German-English and English-German dictionary. There have been only a couple of German terms I could not find here, and I think they were probably slang. This Eighth (2013) edition incorporates changes from the 2006 German Spelling Reform (Rechtschreibreform), by listing the old form in alphabetical sequence with a cross-reference to the new form. I've been using an old Cassell's bilingual dictionary, with a German-only Duden Deutsches Universalworterbuch: Duden Deutsches Universalworterbuch 7th Edition (German Edition) (another excellent reference) as a backup when I couldn't find the word, but since buying the Collins I have not had to use the Duden!

I use this dictionary to read academic (theological) German for the most part, and once in a while to read articles in German newspapers such as Der Spiegel. The dictionary serves both of these purposes very well. It is truly comprehensive. Our chakras, like our God, are invisible, but they sustain us as surely as the elements of life we can see, like water and sunlight. This book explains in clear, uncomplicated language why that is true and how we keep them from doing their necessary work by letting them close.
For me the most valuable section of the book may have been Part One, which synthesizes ascended master teachings on healing with the latest scientific discoveries on energy. Then, when I moved on to learn about the individual chakras and the spiritual rays of light to which they relate, I understood what I was working toward with each invocation.
The book includes teachings from Mother Mary and from masters representing each of the seven rays. They were given during a conference at Lourdes, where many come with the hope of being healed by the waters. The invocations are easy, even pleasant, to recite, no matter how fast you like to read them, and they include one for clearing the secret heart chakra, which doesn’t always get attention.
I see this as a book I will work my way through several times, if not many. Almost certainly some sections will come to feel more relevant than others as I sense which chakras are open—or at least starting to open!—and which my false beliefs keep stubbornly closed, or nearly so. I expect this achievement by Kim Michaels to stand as one of his most valuable gifts to the world.

An incredible tour of some of the best LEGO Technic models in the world. You won't believe your eyes

Just a few years back it seemed like every LEGO Technic creation looked like a chunky girder bridge.

Things have changed.

The Technic models featured throughout this book are so realistic and technically accurate that you won’t believe you are looking at a LEGO model. This book features page after page of eye-popping, full-color photography that makes every model practically fly, screech or blast off the page.

Author Pawel “Sariel” Kmiec is one of the world’s best LEGO Technic builders and this whole book feels like you are getting a personal tour of the world’s best creations chosen by the master himself.

It’s important to note that this book does not teach building techniques, nor does it feature any step-by-step instructions. This book is about jaw-dropping admiration of some of the most technically complex but aesthetically pleasing LEGO models in the world.

The book features 10 broad categories of Technic creations ranging from supercars to aircraft, farm equipment, heavy machinery, giant trucks and more. Every category is spectacular and most feature callouts, cutaways, exploded views or other details that let you appreciate the finer details of the model.

While every model in each category pushes realistic building to the extreme, here are a few of my favorites and a sampling of what’s inside this book:

1. An Eagle Westlake T1G Formula One car.
2. The Holmer Terra Dos T3 sugar beet harvester.
3. A Honda CBR1000RR Repsol racing motorcycle.
4. A Kawasaki Vulcan 800 cruising motorcycle.
5. The Koenigsegg CCX super car.
6. A K2 Black Panther tank.
7. A Kenworth W900L dump truck.
8. A Demag AC50-1 mobile crane.

Kmiec describes each model by providing insights about the real-world version of the creation, and then offers details about how the model was built. He then shares the challenges that he or other builders faced when creating the model. For example, Kmiec notes that the Bugati Veyron featured on page 166 required a sequential transmission and specialized brake system that took nine months to build! This meticulous attention to detail plays out on every page.

While the models are the superstars of this book, the layout and design deserve a callout, too. Carefully placed text, razor sharp images and thoughtfully composed photos add to the precision and quality of this book.

This is a must-have book for all LEGO Technic fans, mechanical engineers and supercar buffs. And this is a great book for any LEGO fan with an interest in robotics, mechanics or photography, or who just wants to be inspired.

I give this book five stars for delivering an excellent collection of world-class models, great support text and spectacular photography.

Outstanding!

This book is outstanding in every way! The models are literally awesome, the photography is of excellent quality, the text is clear, and the book is very well made. This book exceeded my expectations. It contains photographic and textual descriptions of over 70 unique models, in 10 categories, by 36 builders, made with Lego parts, most consisting of thousands of individual pieces. Categories consist of the following:

Agricultural
Aircraft
Automotive
Construction Equipment
Miscellaneous
Motorcycles
Supercars
Tracked Vehicles
Trucks
Watercraft

For many models, the diagrams of the internal drive mechanisms are also provided. The text for each model is generally divided into three sections: "About the Model," "Challenges," and "The Original (i.e. the life-size device)." Many of the interesting features are annotated in the photographs. The Credits section lists the builder and web address of each model, most of which include instructions and videos. Many thanks to Pawel Kmiec and Eric Albrecht for producing this book.

A must have for Lego fans of all ages!

Calling all Lego fans of all ages! This amazing book is a must have for any Lego builder. The book is loaded with incredible Lego Technic models including tanks, tow trucks, robots and more. Each unique design uses only Technic gears, pulleys, pneumatics, and electric motors. The book does not provide step by step instructions but it does give details about the build, the challenges and the specifications. It is a great book for finding inspiration to get creative with Technic pieces. The photos are amazing and show a lot of detail. There are over 75 models in the book. I am giving the book to my 7 yr old son for Christmas along with his fiest Technic set.

I received a review copy of this book however all opinions are my own.
