Excellent concise summaries, gram stains and culture plate photos!

I'm an Infectious Diseases physician currently in an additional year of microbiology fellowship. I bought this book at begin of my fellowship in July and it has aided me well for plate round presentations, during day to day work and in general to point out growth characteristics, biochem's, API's to tech's, students. High quality photos of plates and gram stains. very complete with only rare bugs missing, which can't all be in there in fairness as otherwise this would be another huge and expensive book. Concept of book is superb, particular as concise as it is with short summaries point out essentials. I give it a 5 star from the perspective as a microbiology fellow. It is way to much for a medical student or even ID Fellow unless really, really interested in microbiology. Phanatastic for the micro path attending. The path residents found it usefull as well though.

Painterly renderings of national identity

Analysing five examples of `riverscapes' (the suffix -scapes, following Appadurai's coinage, should be understood as a perspectival construct which implies a reading of something that is inflected by the viewers' historical and political situation), Cusack directs her readers to the spiritual and symbolic value of rivers as an integral part of the construction of nationality. In an age marked by the fluidity of many national boundaries (resulting in the disruption of traditional concepts of territorial integrity), Riverscapes is an outstanding academic work which redirects our attention to the importance of pictorial representation of the national territory and explains how "geographical imaginings of place are an essential component of nationalism" (p.15).

Cusak unveils the social, economic, political and ethnic significance of five rivers (and riverbanks) to demonstrate how they can be understood as repositories of identity: the Hudson, the Thames, the Seine, The Volga and the Shannon. These rivers became, through painterly and graphic media, tokens of a shared ancestry while they unfolded (and staged) relations and assertions of power, class, royal and corporate display, ethnic allegiance or erasure, life style, economic dominance and spiritual quest. Taking the Hudson as example, readers will be able to realise how the Hudson River School painters crystallised images of the riverbanks which rely on a belief in pioneering Christian endeavour in which the wilderness belonged to the chosen people who were sent by God to tame it. The scenery, dominated by the white male Christian hero that embodied the chosen people, and the vast horizons (from which Indians have been elided) are pervaded by this type of gaze. These landscapes are painterly assertions of the idea of `chosenness'. The Seine, on the other hand, became the backdrop to Impressionist renderings of leisure moments and a leisured, affluent middle-class that found in boating and other similar pursuits on the Seine an expression of their social and economic status.

Riverscapes will help you understand the origins of present-day visually coded realities while Cusack proves how images of beauty elicit positive feelings of pride, belonging and sharing (even if they subsume sharp inner conflicts). The importance of the pictorial representation of `riverscapes', understood as shared common legacy to certain groups, is anchored on solid, compelling arguments.

Supple, elegant writing adds to the quality of a book that is, at once, dense in meaning, a fresh, captivating approach to matters of nationalism, and pleasurable reading.

Lives up to its name

I'm sure Dale Rippke was well intentioned in writing this book, but sadly the effect falls flat. The Dark Storm Conan Chronology is its best part, but after that, the book really lives up to its name--ie, it's heretical to Howard's work. Rippke cites non-canonical writing and seems to make up facts altogether to revise Howard's Hyborian world into his conception of it. (Exactly what is the point of citing works by other writers as apocryphal if one cites them in making points?) While it's admittedly a small point, Rippke completely overlooks the background of a non-Conan story--Valley of the Worm--and places it after the end of the Hyborian Age, while internal evidence clearly indicates it should be placed between the Pre-Cataclysmic and Hyborian Ages. As noted, this is a small annoyance, but it shows the trend of the book. In places, Rippke does his homework, but too often he undermines this by either citing apocryphal works or just creating rationales altogether alien to Howard's work with little justification given for their inclusion. Thus, while I wanted to enjoy this book much more than I did, I ultimately didn't much care for it and so can not recommend it.

Hyboria redisovered

An interesting and fascinating book published in the style of old time pulps this is a collection of well thought out and researched articles published by Dale Rippke. A noted Howard scholar Mr. Rippke has several articles here rangeing from details of Conan's career to mysteries of the Thurian age and to ideas of what the real Hyborian World Map should look like. It should be noted that Mongoose Publishing has used his map of Hyboria for their Return to the Road Kings book.

The Higher Criticism Reaches Tarantia

OK, between half a star and a star is because of the subject matter. There is so little Howard material available that I rate it a little more favorably than I would, say, one more Sherlock Holmes commentary. But Rippke has done a good thorough job or reading the original Howard stories attentively, and thinking through what he's read. If you're a Hyboriphile, you probably want this one on your shelves next to the original Conan stories.

A few observations. To be clear, this is not a "Conan" pastiche, and it's not a literary criticism anthology. It's a collection of articles on the Conan stories previously written by Rippke himself, and the articles discuss Conan and his world much the way the "higher criticism" approaches the world of Sherlock Holmes--when would the Hyborian Age "really" have been? And in what order did Conan's adventures as described by Howard "really" take place? He doesn't carry the whole thing as far as some of the Baker Street Irregulars do--that is, he acknowledges that Conan is a literary creation and that Howard's intent is part of the solution. But I think that's mostly to the good.

But it. It's worth the money.
