About the Author
Lundy Bancroft has spent the last 15 years of his career specializing in abusive men. The author of articles in medical journals and professional books, he is the former co-director of Emerge, the nation's first program for abusive men. Now he trains various non- profit and state and judicial agencies in working with domestic abuse.
JAC Patrissi is the founder and former director of the Vermont Victim Assistance Academy. She facilitates the Growing a New Heart Retreat series for women healing from destructive relationships.

Compassionate life-saver in a toxic pond of mental abuse

I am a strong minded, educated, self-supporting woman. I was blinded by what I thought was "a deep and abiding love" for my charming, magnetic, brilliant, handsome husband who, in the eyes of most of our friends and family, is a sexy, entertaining charmer. A great provider, husband and father. I found this compassionate, insightful book an emotional life saver in the toxic pond of mental abuse I know I MUST NOW emerge from.

After 27 years of searching for a solution to my marriage problems, I finally found the help I needed to make sense of my own behavior and to give up trying to get him to be different. The insights I gained are tremendous. The book helped me see that his suggestion that I "approach him properly" was a hook that led to the bottom of the pond. When defending myself strongly against his unreasonable jealousy, his unfair demands, domestic underfunctioning, distortions and lies did NOT make me guilty of abusing him, as he so vehemently claimed. How his running me in verbal circles and blaming me for running him in circles was just a tactic to exhaust me. I needed and appreciated much needed empathy for how and why I didnt just simply "jump out" and leave.

It helped me understand why I was able to tolerate a final year of angry explosions, open raging, infidelity and systematic social humiliation. It helped me understand and cope with my failure to get support from friends and family. It encouraged me to try with family and friends in a different way. When I finally had an emotional break, I took myself to a local office of HAWC, completely beside myself. Me? Asking for help and support from woman's help center? I make donations to that charity.

They lent me Lundy Bancroft's book Why Does He Do That? That led me to this book. Because of the resonating humanity and clear understanding of what I have gone through, I am finally able to face the truth. It's not possible to "behave" in a way that would make my husband be nicer, more fair, more caring or more civil to me. Conventional strategies failed because he does not want our marriage to be different. He chooses to abuse me. I have to love myself the way I love him. I have to be a support to myself. I have to surround myself by people who agree I am worthy of love, care and compassion. I am using this book first to rebuild my outer and inner strength to have clear, strong boundaries with him to manage him out of my life. Step by step i will use the resources to disengage from this man who seems to possess an unending need to hook me for reasons that I may never fully understand and will eventually stop caring about completely.

Having found this book, I know I will be alright. I was once a proactive, energetic and vibrant woman. I will find myself again, likely much stronger and more powerful than before. As I end this review, it is my hope for our daughters and sons that Lundy Bancrofts books become a "must read" in the Health ciriculum in every middle school across the country.

A great guide to giving it your all before making your next move

Most women in destructive relationships know when the relationship is over. Choosing to leave is not the same thing as knowing it's over. The reasons that women stay with destructive partners after it's over generally fall into three categories. The first category is economics. Sometimes it's better to live with a destructive man than to be homeless and poor. The second category is magical thinking. This comes in multiple flavors. One form of magical thinking is the belief that God is going to swoop in and change this man's behaviors and attitudes through no work, no struggle, and no time lapse. He's just going to wake up one day and realize he truly has treated you poorly. All of his apologies will now have meaning and he'll start treating you better. Another form of magical thinking is the belief that one day a large truck is going to ram the back of his car and kill him and all your troubles will be over. Some other flavors somewhere in between those two exist. The third category is that somewhere inside, even if it is only .01%, the woman believes that there is some hope. She is going to stay in the relationship until the hope factor goes down to zero percent. She is going to make valiant efforts to make the relationship work because of that tiny piece of hope.

If you are a woman who knows your destructive relationship is over, but you feel unable to determine if you should leave or not, this book will help. Most likely, you don't need help realizing the relationship is destructive and you don't really need help knowing how to leave. (If you want to explore all the ways that your partner is destructive, then this book will help you sort out your partner's types of destructive behavior.) Most women know how to go to the internet or local crisis center and find resources for leaving. This book will help you in the area that is most important. Bancroft and Patrissi will help you know that you gave it your all to make the relationship work before deciding to leave. The book will help you realize that a destructive partner is only going to change (if at all) after long, hard, dedicated work. No magic is involved.

If you are in a destructive relationship and you want to exhaust all possible avenues of creating change within the relationship, then this book is for you. This book will lovingly guide you through the steps to address your partner's destructive behavior in a healthy and safe way.

If you have been in a destructive relationship and you want to focus on yourself and find a way to build a new life, this book is for you too. The first part of the book will validate for you just how difficult it was to live with a destructive partner and keep your sanity and self- esteem intact. The second part of the book will give you exercises to start letting go of the pain so that you can start building the life that you want and deserve. You will realize that you are not alone with the struggle of healing from the harm caused by a destructive partner.

A godsend for women maneuvering abusive relationships

In my opinion, Lundy Bancroft is the most perceptive and useful author on verbally/emotionally abusive relationships to date. (And I've probably read about 20 books on this topic by now.) In Bancroft's earlier book, "Why Does He DO That?" he set the bar on establishing insight into abusive relationships. This book serves as an unofficial follow-up book, or a "how to" for women who are contemplating what they should do about their abusive relationship. Like his first book, "Should I Stay or Should I Go" is equally insightful--but in a different way. His earlier book was insightful about why abusers are the way they are; this book is insightful in terms of guiding an abused person to see new sides to herself and to assess her relationship in a very structured fashion. This is more of a workbook. It enables the woman to determine what she needs in life and aids her in determining whether it makes sense to try to have her needs met through her current relationship. This book can't make any of the decisions for you, but it is a great asset to have for your journey. I espeically appreciated the supportive tone throughout this book -- the authors honestly seem to be personal advocates of the reader, and offer only constructive input to her. If you are currently in an abusive relationship and need to make some decisions about it, I highly recommend this book. And, if you haven't already read "Why Does He DO That?" I recommend reading that, too. (If time is not an issue, I'd read "Why Does He DO That? first, and then work through Should I Stay or Should I Go?)

It is a classic mystery that my students love. They beg me not to stop reading as the plot builds. One of my students loved the book so much that he went on to read 12 more of his books and chose Bill Wallace as his research author study. I bought several books to replace some of my worn out copies.

Exciting, easy to read for 10-12 year olds.

As a teacher, I used this novel with my 6th graders early in the school year. It had lots of adventure, a little suspense, and humor. It was a good starter novel for the year.

An excellent and cheap textbook on UML

Considering the pricetag of textbooks on this subject, this Schaum's outline is an excellent value. This is one of those Schaum's that has enough good narrative to stand alone as a textbook on a subject. The book takes the practical stance of involving two case studies throughout that serve as subject matter for the numerous examples. One is CarMatch, which is a franchising company promotes car sharing. The other is VolBank, which is a non-profit organization matching volunteers with people and groups needing help. This book covers version 2.0 of UML. The book provides a "How To" section in each chapter in whch examples are developed from one of the two case studies. The two case studies provide examples that cover business modeling, information system development, and real-time system development.

The first two chapters of the book introduce the case studies and provide background to UML. The next twelve chapters explain the notation of UML diagrams and how to produce them. For each type of diagram there are sections on the notation, on how to produce the diagrams, on how each diagram is related to other diagrams, on how each diagram can be used in business modeling, and on how each diagram fits into the Unified Software

Development Process. Each chapter has a set of review questions with answers at the back of the book, solved problems, and supplementary problems. Chapter 15 covers the ways in which UML can be extended. The final two chapters provide information on related topics: Software tools for UML and design patterns. The book concludes with a summary of UML notation, answer pointers for the review questions, the UML Metamodel architecture, a glossary, and a bibliography.

The only thing missing from this book is more integration with tools such as Rational Rose, and more examples of coding from the UML. However, considering the price and the ground covered, I still consider this a five star book on the subject of UML.

A review of Real World Research

As the title suggests, this book is for researchers faced with 'real world' challenges like limited time, money and the need to address a presenting problem or issue. Its chapters cover everything from how to write a research proposal to getting your research published and acting on your findings. In between, the reader is offered overviews on different data collection and analysis methods covering quantitative and qualitative approaches. Pages 244-6 offer an example of a well set-out questionnaire - something that anyone who has ever sat down to design a survey has probably wished for.
Real World Research will suit people from a variety of disciplines including health, education and the social sciences who are looking for a book to guide them through the research process. Well written and easy to read, it is also comprehensive enough to suit the 'dabbler' who wants to learn about a particular methodology but doesn't want commit themselves to an entire book on the one approach.

Ick! Epitome of boring textbook. Some concepts are explained in-depth, and some not so much. Many of the approaches to research don't include enough detail to allow students to fully understand how they differ from similar approaches and require readers to find alternate sources to fill in the details. The writing style leaves a lot to be desired. It is very dry, boring reading and it is very difficult to stay focused long enough to finish a chapter.

This expanded follow-up to Weiner's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1988 Philadelphia Inquirer series exposing the Pentagon's secret treasury offers a comprehensive look at the origin and growth of this budget and the weapons and wars it has financed. Among the programs examined are the Stealth bomber (an "impossibly expensive mistake") and a satellite system called MILSTAR which is central to the plan to "win" a nuclear war that will already have been lost in the event of its activation. Weiner brings to light black-budgeted activities of a cadre of colonels, retired generals and CIA agents, a virtual hidden army within the U.S. Army that "came close to hijacking a fair amount of power" during the Reagan years. This hard-hitting expose of power out of control, immune from accountability, is well documented. In this book based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles for the Philadelphia Inquirer , journalist Weiner probes the way the Pentagon has used secret budgets to fund huge military programs. This has grown to the point that there are now more than 100 multimillion- and multibillion-dollar weapons systems, many of them nuclear weapons designed to fight and win World Wars III and IV, built without the awareness of the public or even the Congress. Weiner takes a close look at programs such as the Stealth bomber and provides fascinating detail from Congressional testimony. The thesis of the book--that secrecy in government military programs is antithetical to democracy--is well documented and hugely important. As the Cold War draws to a close and military budgets come under attack, the public and Congress may tend to forget the defense establishment's inclination toward secrecy and self-perpetuation. Weiner's book serves as a timely reminder that this would be unwise. Highly recommended.

Tim Weiner is the author of five books. "Legacy of Ashes", his history of the CIA, won the National Book Award. His journalism on secret government programs received the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. As a correspondent for The New York Times, he covered war and terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Sudan, and other nations. He directs the Carey Institute's nonfiction residency program in upstate New York and teaches as an Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies at Princeton.

Excellent book. Written almost 20 years ago it is as updated as if it had been written yesterday.

Money talks! And does it have a story to tell!

Blank Check is a meticulously researched and chilling account of how the Cold War led the nation into a frenzy of spending based on fear and propaganda. The book spans 40 years of government development and National crises from the viewpoint of a checkbook. However, the fact that the book was published before the fall of the Soviet Union means that, to a modern reader, the stories told are a frightening look at times gone by rather than a relevant commentary on modern life. Also, with no central character to latch onto the book, while conscience stirring, is not necessarily compelling. That said, revelations in this book about the government's outright violation of the constitution in the name of National Security still have the ability to leave a reader appalled.

Relevant to Modern DoD Ethics Issues Including Private Contractors

Fantastic book and interesting how useful reading an "older" investigation of the defense department black budget and associated misappropriations/abuses can be in easily tying the very same ethical/strategic defense issues to the more recent "Spies for Hire" by Tim Shorrock (also a fantastic read).

The similarities regarding decades long ethical issues with regard to the lack of oversight within black budget is almost overwhelming while simultaneously intriguing and disheartening: no concrete evidence, whatsoever, that Congressional or other government oversight of black budget operations or DoD contracting, in general, has improved. In fact, following 9/11 the situation, if anything, financial and ethical accountability has actually degraded.

This timeless, still-compelling book provides that much-needed historical perspective yet also begs the question: over the next 10 or 20 years is there any reason to believe money will be spent, appropriately, to truly and measurable advance US National Security with concrete accountability for those instances where projects and leaders fail to act responsibly...at great expense to the American taxpayers actually undermining US defense and war fighter readiness?

Men who do "women's work" have consistently been the butt of jokes, derided for their lack of drive and masculinity. In this eye-opening study, Christine Williams provides a wholly new look at men who work in predominantly female jobs. Having conducted extensive interviews in four cities, Williams uncovers how men in four occupations—nursing, elementary school teaching, librarianship, and social work—think about themselves and experience their work.

Contrary to popular imagery, men in traditionally female occupations do not define themselves differently from men in more traditional occupations. Williams finds that most embrace conventional, masculine values. Her findings about how these men fare in their jobs are also counterintuitive. Rather than being surpassed by the larger number of women around them, these men experience the "glass escalator effect," rising in disproportionate numbers to administrative jobs at the top of their professions. Williams finds that a complex interplay between gendered expectations embedded in organizations, and the socially determined ideas workers bring to their jobs, contribute to mens' advantages in these occupations.

Using a feminist psychoanalytic perspective, Williams calls for more men not only to cross over to women's occupations, but also to develop alternative masculinities that find common ground with traditionally female norms of cooperation and caring. Until the workplace is sexually integrated and masculine and feminine norms equally valued, it will unfortunately remain "still a man's world."

pinpointing privilege

Dr. Williams notes that most work on gender minorities in gender-unbalanced professions focuses on women in mostly male jobs. She asks if the situation is the same or different for men in predominately female jobs. She interviewed and accompanied librarians, social workers, nurses, and elementary school teachers to investigate.

She finds a world of difference. Men are encouraged in these professions. They are pointed to leadership positions there. Further, they find ways to masculinize their positions.

Dr. Williams notes that these positions were first only given to middle-class, native-born, white women. Thus, she does an excellent job of covering race, class, and gender, rather than gender alone. Still, I wish she could have said more on men of color. She included a Native American man who said there was no shame in becoming a social worker since it gave him the chance to help other Natives. I wonder if other men of color see these jobs differently from white men. In Chicago, my hometown, the Board of Education would love to have more Black men as teachers at any level. I wonder if this is a concern nationwide.

While Dr. Williams does include one gay man, I thought this book could have said more on sexual orientation. Dr. Williams said that these male workers do things to differentiate themselves from their female colleagues. Do the straight male workers distance themselves from or denigrate their gay male counterparts in these fields? In my high school, other teachers would stress that the male librarian was married to a woman, without any student ever asking the question.

If you enjoy reading books about oppression and privilege in the workforce, then this book is for you. This is the second Williams book that I've read and I found it fascinating. She writes on the scholarly questions that I would be interested in if I were an academic. I strongly encourage both men and women in these field to read this book. I also recommend this for men thinking of studying for positions in these fields.

worst you'll ever read

This is the worst sociology book I have ever read, a complete disservice to the stuggle for women's equality and an embarrassment to the university which trained its author and to the press which published it. I was one of the subjects interviewed by the author. Her methods are flawed: she failed to interview both men and women working for the same institution, rather than simply in the same profession, making everything the men told her about their jobs worthless as scientific data. Her analysis is suspect: she didn't publish the full text of her interviews, but simply selected statements, leaving the reader no way to fairly judge the context or overall tone of the subjects, or judge whether these quoted responses were typical or unusual. Her conclusions are laughable: she found that men either seek promotion or do not. Men seek promotion in order to dominate and control women; men decline promotion because they secretly despise the women they work with. It's too bad such an interesting and important subject could not be dealt with in a scientific way.
