Important collection of essays on culture and thought

Five stars if you're an anthropology theory junkie. For anyone else, this book may be a bit much. It's dense going, and the author assumes you know the history of ethnological theory. If you do, you will love watching Viveiros de Castro's mind flash from Amazonian cosmologies to Siberian shamans to French intellectuals to Kantian logic and back--always winding up in the Amazon rainforest with people who tell him that jaguars are perfectly human when by themselves, or in their own jaguar perspective. To a jaguar, blood is manioc beer, just as, to a tapir, his wallow is a finely decorated ceremonial hall. A cockroach may be called big game--because it is big game to a predatory wasp. Viveiros calls this view (the idea that nonhumans see themselves as the real humans, humans and other fdifferent creatures as prey or predator) perspectivism, and uses it to challenge anthropologists. It seems strange to anyone who is not an Indigenous Amazonian, but why is it strange? And how do we deal with it as a cosmology just as important, interesting, and in need of thorough and deep understanding as our own (whatever that may be)? If we want to understand humanity, or even some humans, we have to understand viewpoints like this with full seriousness and depth--not dismiss them as quaint weirdness or the like. The book deals with ways to get at understandings of other views, and with the Amazonian perspectives that stimulate Viveiros' thinking.
One particularly important set of concepts in Viveiros' thinking is noted in the title: the complex of ideas such as relative, relativity, relationship, relating, and other cognates. Viveiros sees thought and human communication as being basically about interaction and relationship. (This is straight Kantian anthropology, in spite of Viveiros saying at one point that we need to get beyond Kant.) Viveiros keeps returning to these ideas throughout the book, in many contexts.
This book consists of essays and talks delivered over many years, so it is hard to follow. Points appear in various forms, and sometimes a later essay strongly qualifies an earlier one. Some of the talks were humorous, which makes them delightful or downright quirky. Like many French thinkers (but IMHO with more success), Viveiros uses paradox, conundrum, and apparent contradiction to drive points or simply to make the reader think.
This is a very important book for anyone who wants to understand really different cultures, but be prepared to work to get the blood/manioc beer/essence out of it. I am still unpacking possible reasons why cover design shows the west end of an eastbound jaguar.

The best current source of AP Physics 1 Practice Questions

This book provides a much needed bank of questions for the relatively new AP Physics 1 exam.

My only gripe, so far, is that the questions have 5 answers (A through E) while the actual test has only A through D. It also appears at first glance that many of these questions are more similar to AP Physics B type questions than the new, highly confusing, type of questions actually asked on the AP Physics 1 test.

In particular, the FRQ style questions do not come very close to the type of FRQ questions on the sample tests that have been released. There don't appear to be very many of the "short answer" style questions, or the college board type questions in which an entire page of confusing material is presented followed by questions that explicitly disallow the use of equations. (Thus turning a physics test into a reading comprehension test, but don't get me started on that.) But even though I disagree with those types of questions even being on the AP Physics test to begin with, hey, this is a prep book and so it should present the good, the bad, and in this case, the ugly types of questions.

Clearly it will take some time for authors of these types of books to get enough examples of the new style questions to successfully mimic them, but I still have to ding this by one star.

Overall though, I will make every single one of my kids buy this book and churn through them, it is the best thing currently available.

Well, when McGraw Hill was going to release a new AP Physics 1 review book, I decided to give this book a look, considering how good the AP Physics 1 book by Greg Jacobs was. So I went to Barnes and Noble and decided to flip through this book. This is what I found:

Literally 70-90% of the practice questions came from the old 500 AP Physics B and C question book and do not resemble the emphasis of the new AP Physics 1 Exam at all. They are copied almost verbatim, with one choice dropped and some altered here and there. But all in all, the book largely retains content from its earlier edition. DO NOT BUY.

Okay, but 5 steps needs to "step it up"

While I still think that this book can serve as a good review for an AP Physics I student, it is not a new updated version to go with the current test. The questions are still the old AP test style with students solving for mathematical answers. They are not the new style of questions seen on the actual AP Physics I test. I am using it to review old concepts with my students, but it certainly would be nice if they were reflective of what would be on the test. Additionally, I have found errors in the key including two problems so far that don't even have the correct answer as an answer choice. 5 steps needs to step it up.

A good book that lets parents help their kids begin to read

Bibs is a beginning reader book that features a cat (Bibs) and a dog (Lucky). The words include both phonetic and sight words. There is a pre-test and a post-test, but instructions for administering it are not in the student edition -- they are probably in the teacher's companion guide. My six-year-old kindergartener enjoys the simple story lines, and is eager to read more each day.

Excellent Series

This is the first title of nine in the Merrill Reading Skilltext series (starts of with Bibs, Mack, Joy, etc.). We have been using this series as adult literacy tutors and it has been working very well. ‘Bibs’ is targeted for reading level grade 1.2 students. You can do so much with the informational instruction (create word lists, Power Point or Keynote presentations, etc.) and each title includes a pre-test for the next level. I highly recommend this series for anyone learning to read--children or adults.

Granddaughter loves it

My granddaughter is in first grade and really likes using this book. It has a short phonics based story with pictures on first page. The second page has a short and easily understood phonics practice, plus a multiple-choice for the main idea of the story.
